Santa Maria della Salute
Venice - Santa Maria della Salute
The church Santa Maria della Salute was built in thanksgiving for the city's liberation from the plaque epidemic of 1630 and 1631 that killed 47,000 people in Venice. Baldassare Longhena was 32 years old when started the church in 1630, and worked on it for the rest of his life. It was completed in 1687, five years after his death. The luminous interior has six chapels with one altar each and a beautiful polychrome marble floor. In the sacristy are five paintings of Titian, a Tintoretto and a precious 15th century tapestry.
