| Santa Maria della Salute church is supported by over one million timber piles. Beyond the church is Punta della Dogana, upon which stands a 17th century tower crowned by two bronze Atlases supporting a golden globe. From the 15th century onwards, duty on goods arriving from overseas was extracted on this side. |
