Venice - Bridges and Canals
A "Rio" or canal is the typical water road of Venice. The "rii" divide the approx. 118 isles that make up the city. There are 160 canals including the Grand Canal. The gondola has been a part of Venice since the 11th century. In 1562 it was decreed that all gondolas should be painted black to stop people from making an ostentatious show of their wealth. For special ocasions they are decorated with flowers.
