| The Doges' Palace, a triumph of Gothic architecture, was the symbol of the supreme power and glory of the Republic of St. Mark. On this site, towards the end of the 9th century, Doges Angelo and Giustiniano Partecipazio established the seat of the government which came to be known as the "Palazzo Ducale", since it was the residence of the Doge, the supreme head of state. |
