| Volterra fortress |
| The Volterra fortress, walls, and gates still stand mightily over Le Balze, a stunning series of gullied hills and valleys to the west that were formed by irregular erosion. Among Volterra's best preserved ancient remains is the Etruscan Porta all'Arco (4th C.), the 1st Century BC Teatro Romano and Roman terme (baths). The town has been also known for its alabaster. |
