Tuscany - Siena (Piazza del Campo)
Siena stretches over three hills lying between the valeys of the Arbia, the Elsa and the Merse rivers. Siena was under the domination of Caesar, the Longobards, the Carolingians, managed to became a Free City at the begining of the 12th century, fought some bloody wars against Florence and in 1269 it underwent a final defeat. The city was finally absorbed by the grand duchy of Tuscany in 1559, ruled by Florence and then in 1859 it was the first Tuscan town to belong to the Kingdom of Italy.
