| Greve in Chianti is a friendly market town with shops, cafes and restaurants lining its main piazza. The asymetrical Piazza Matteotti has in the center, a statue of Giovanni da Verrazano (1480-1528), the explorer who discovered New York harbor. At one end of the square is the Chiesa di Santa Croce, with work from the school of Fra Angelico (c. 1400-55). Just 2 km west of Greve, in the town of Montefioralle stands the home of Americo Vespucci (1454-1512), the navigator and mapmaker who named America. |
