Postcards from Tuscany
Arezzo (The Chimera), Cortona (The Town Hall)
Cortona the "Mother of Troy and Grandmother of Rome",  is magnificently situated on a steep hill at the confluence of the Tiber and Chiana valleys. Tradition claims that it was founded by Dardanus (the founder of Troy), who lost his helmet on Cortona's hill. By the 5th century BC the Etruscan had built the first set of town walls. A major power in the Middle Ages, it was able to hold its own against Arezzo, Perugia and Siena, but was captured by King Ladislas of Naples in 1409 and sold to the Florentines two years later.
