Postcards from Tuscany
Grosseto - The Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Grosseto is located in the lower part of the plain of the Ombrone river, built along the Maremma road leading from Rome to Pisa. The last stronghold to give up its weapons to the Florentines, passed under the power of the Medicis in 1559, when Grosseto knew a period of economic and demographic revival. The city centre is surrounded by strong walls built by Grand Duke of Tuscany Francesco I in 1574. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, built in 1190 by architect Sozzo Pace Rustichino in the Romanesque-Gothic style is a architectonic beauty.
