Postcards from Tuscany
San Gimignano
An Etruscan settlement was present on the hill of San Gimignano as early as the 6th century before Christ, when the people of Volterra reached the Elsa Valley in their search for land to till. The name of the village,  where Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Cisterna are now located, was Silvan or Silva, to praise the god of the woods. A church in honor of Saint Gemigniano, bishop of Modena in the 4th century, may have been built here during the Gothic wars fought from 530 to 556.
