Postcards from Tuscany
San Gimignano - Piazza della Cisterna
Tuscany - San Gimignano (Piazza della Cisterna)
Piazza della Cisterna is named after the 13th century well at its center and is the heart of the old town, surrounded by the medieval palaces and dominated by the Torri Guelfe Gemelle and by the Torre del Diavolo. The 12th century Romanesque Collegiata Church of Santa Maria is a treasure trove of frescoes, including 26 episodes from the Old Testament (1367) by Bartolo di Fredi. The Cappella di Santa Fina contains glorious frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaia (1449-94).
