Postcards from Tuscany
San Gimignano
Tuscany - San Gimignano view
San Gimignano high walls and narrow streets are typical of Tuscan hill towns, but it is the surviving medieval towers that set the town apart from its neighbors and create its uniquely photogenic silhouette. Today there are only 14 of the original 72 towers, and it was possible to cross the town by rooftop rather than road. Although San Gimignano is of Etruscan origin, it started to develop only around the 12th century when the famous Via Franchigena was built nearby.
