Postcards from Tuscany
Pisa - The Monumental Cemetery
Tuscany (Pisa) - The Monumental Cemetery
Construction began in 1278 on a project by Giovanni di Simone to gather the Tombs of the noble Pisan families around the old Cemetery. The vast marble arches of this long, rectangular building are said to enclose soil brought back from the Holy Land. It was destroyed by bombing in 1944, then was rebuilt. The splendid interior portico is basically an important art gallery, containing a Hall of the Frescoes, statues and sarcophaguses of high value.
