| The National Museum of San Matteo is located on the banks of the Arno, an elegantly fronted medieval Benedictine Monastery that also served as a prison in the 19th century. It is one of the most important museums in Italy for its collection of wooden sculptures and art work of the Maestros from the 12th-13th century Pisan School such as Nicola, Giovanni, Andrea and Nino Pisano, and Bonanno. The museum houses a stunning relinquary by Donatello (c.1386) |
