|The first historical outline of the Livorna village dates back to 904 AD. In the 14th century the Pisans turned it into a fortified port and the Medicis, who gave it a definitive aspect, bought it from Genoese in 1421. In 1577 Francesco I de' Medici started to rebuild the Medici town around the ancient Pisan Castle, surrounded by the Moats. Livorno was bombed during the World War II and many monuments were destroyed. The two fortresses, some churches, palaces and the I Quattro Mori (Four Moors) monument were saved.
