Postcards from Romania
Ieud in winter
Nowhere else in Europe do folk costumes persist so strongly, the men wearing tiny clop straw hats and medieval rawhide galoshes or felt boots with thongs, and the women wearing boldy striped catrinita apron with cloth from the water-powered fulling mills, and embroidering intricate designs on the wide sleeved cotton blouses worn by both sexes. During markets and festivals the villages seem ablaze with colour.
