Most of the Saxon population left Romania, particulary since 1990. Today the ethnic mix of Sighisoara (around 40,000) includes Romanians, Hungarians, gypsies and less than 500 Saxons.

| The towns' oldest known census was in 1488. Sighisoara had 600 inhabitants, 20 lodgers, 3 clerks, 2 millowners, and 4 shepherds. Most of the Saxon population left Romania, particulary since 1990.
