Rome's greatest amphitheater was begun by Vespasian in AD 72 and finished by his son Titus in AD 80. Hebrew prisoners were employed in its constructions. Deadly gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights were staged by emperors and wealthy citizens, mainly to gain popularity.
