| Santa Maria Maggiore basilica was founded in about AD 420, the fourth church of Rome, it is the largest dedicated to the Virgin. Famous for its spectacular mosaics and a blend of architectural styles ranging from Early Christian to late Baroque. The column in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore came from the Basilica of Constantine. In 1611 a bronze of the Virgin and Child was added to the ancient column. |
