| San Giovanni in Laterano (St. John) it is the Cathedral of Rome. Founded by Emperor Constantine and called the "Basilica of the Saviour" during the time of Silvester I (314-335), it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The actual Basilica dates from 1589. In 1646 Borromini restyled the interior, but retains its original form. Before the papacy moved to Avignon in 1309, the ajoining Lateran Palace was the official papal residence. |
