| Ravenna was inhabited by Umbrians, later occupied by the Etruscans, colonized by Rome in 2nd century B.C. and made the capital of the Western Empire in AD 402. The honor was short lived, the city was taken by the barbarian Ostrogoths in the 5th century and in 6th century it was conquered by the Byzantines, who were responsible for Ravenna's most glorious era. Today, Ravenna is a quiet city of brick palaces, cobbled streets and incomparable mosaics which have made it famous all over the world. |
