Postcards from Perugia
Fontana Maggiore (The Major Fountain)
Perugia - Fontana Maggiore (The Major Fountain)
The Major Fountain is composed of two polygon shaped marble basins, one placed above the other. The lower basin comprises twenty five sections, each of which is divided into two panels. The sculpted panels are describing episodes from the Old Testament, classical myth, Aesop's fables and the twelve months of the year. The work of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano represents a sublime expression of plastic sensibility and an extraordinary composural harmony.
