Perugia was an Etruscan stronghold, located on a hill, 493 meters above sea level. It is not known for sure when the original urban nucleus was formed, the ancient walls, dated from 6th-2nd century B.C. and that Perugia was the seat of one of the 12 "lucomonie", give an indication of its importance as an Etruscan town. After the year 1200 Perugia became part of the Roman domain and after 90 B.C. was granted Roman city status.
