|Charming Parma is located north of the Apennines and south of the Po River. Much of the lively historic center has been untouched by modern times, despite heavy damage during World War II. Few Italian towns are as urbane or prosperous as Parma, not only a byword for gustatory delight food and good living but also a treasure trove of excellent paintings, superlative sculpture, and fine medieval buildings. It boasts one of Italy's top opera houses. Parma draws crowds for its sublime prosciutto di Parma and for its superior Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (best known as Parmesan).
