| Versailles Palace was inspired by the Louis XIV's envy of his finance minister's chateau at Vaux-le-Vicomte. He built the largest palace in Europe, housing 20,000 people at a time. Architects Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart designed the buildings, painter Charles Le Brun designed the interiors and landscaper artist Andre Le Notre designed the gardens. Louis XIV's orders were to build a palace a hundred times the size of Vaux-le-Vicomte chateau. |
