|Arc de Triomphe|
|After the victory of the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, Napoleon promised his men to go home beneath triumphal arches. Construction of the Arc de Tromphe begun in 1806 from plans of architect Jean Chalgrin and was completed in 1836. The world's most famous triumphal arch stand 164ft (50m) high in the centre of the place de l'Etoile.
