| The name of Tismana has Thracian origins and means a "place fortified with walls". The monastery was built into the side of a tree covered cliff face and surrounded by hills and waterfalls. The original monastery was founded by monk and calligrapher Nicodim. The main church, completed in 1377, is a stunning piece of Serbian style architecture. | |
