Brasov - The Black Church
Brasov - Ecaterina Gate
During the heyday of Saxon rule, the Romanian population was compelled to live beyong the citadel walls. They could only enter the centre at certain times, and had to pay a toll at the gate for the privilege of selling their produce. The Poarta Schei was built in 1825 by Emperor Franz I, next to the splendid Renaissance-style Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei) of 1559, which bears the city's coat of arms.
