| During the heyday of Saxon rule, the Romanian population was compelled to live beyong the citadel walls. They could only enter the centre at certain times, and had to pay a toll at the gate for the privilege of selling their produce. The Poarta Schei was built in 1825 by Emperor Franz I, next to the splendid Renaissance-style Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei) of 1559, which bears the city's coat of arms. |
