| Southern Transylvania was the heartland of the Saxon community, although the Saxon people have almost all departed to Germany, the landscape is still dotted with the vestiges of their culture. Their name for Transylvania was Siebenburgen, derived from the original "seven towns" that divided the teritory between them, of which Hermannstadt (Sibiu) became the most powerful. In-between the towns hundreds of villages grew up, farming communities that developed a distinctive culture. |
