Postcards from Bologna
Bologna - Porta Galliera (Galliera Gate)
Bologna - Galiera Gate (Porta Galliera)
Porta Galliera was built in 1661 by Bartolomeo Provaglia in place of the ruined 13th century gate. On the left of the gate are the remains of the Galliera castle. The ancient fortress was built for the representatives of the Pope in order to better control the town under a military viewpoint; rebuilt five times, the fortress was destroyed as many times by the people of Bologna during riots and revolts. The last destruction dates back to 1511, during the Papacy of Julius II.
